You don’t need to have a specific item in mind, but having a rough idea of what you’re drawn to, whether it’s certain materials, eras, or colours, will help you shop with more purpose. Are you into 70s ceramics? Art deco glassware? Mid-century furniture? Knowing your tastes makes it easier to spot what’s right for your space (and avoid being distracted by things that aren’t quite you).
Don’t forget to look beyond first impressions. Check the back, base, or underside of a piece for makers' marks, stamps, or signatures, these can tell you a lot about age and origin. A quick Google lens search of the name or logo can uncover more than you think, and might even lead you to a whole new world of collecting.
Vintage doesn’t mean pristine, and that’s half the charm. A little wear and tear, a chip here, a faded label there… these details add character and tell a story. That said, always ask yourself whether the flaw affects function or if it’s something you can live with. For decorative items, a small imperfection might even make you love it more.
